Will The CDC Guidelines Help Schools Reopen?

The CDC published guidelines for school reopening just before Valentine’s Day, perhaps the hottest aphrodisiac for parents since the pandemic’s onset.

But how will the new guidelines affect you? Can you count on school reopening in the fall? I spoke to numerous professionals about the public health challenges K-12 schools face, what parents should expect and how families can best handle the coming months.

First, let’s get the facts straight: The CDC suggests that schools can open safely if there are sufficient “mitigation strategies,” including masking, distancing at six feet, testing, cleaning, and air ventilation. As Mike Magee, CEO of Chiefs for Change, which works with school leaders representing 20 million students nationwide and put out recommendations to school districts shortly before the CDC, confirmed: “When you mask, socially distance, clean and ventilate properly, schools are among the very safest places in any community.”
